# CAPS2025 Glossary

Below you will find the definition/meaning for the relevant CAPS2025 terminologies.

## A

| Term | Meaning |
| --- | --- |
| Application code | A 4 or 11-character code that describes the materials and service requirements for a component. |
| ASME class rating | Pressure rating according to ASME B16.5. |
| Assembly | A combination of piping components for a defined application e.g. drains, meters, runs, etc. |
| Assembly code | A 4-digit code to identify an Assembly description. |
| Assembly figure | A 1-digit or 2-digit code to identify the type of Assembly (see DEP 31.38.01.10-Gen. – appendices). |

## B

| Term | Meaning |
| --- | --- |
| Bolt set | An even number of stud bolts required for a flange joint |
| Branch code | A 1-digit code to identify a branch type of a branch table. |
| Branch table | An overview with selected branch connections per run size, identified by a 1- or 2-digit code. |

## C

| Term | Meaning |
| --- | --- |
| Component | A unique part of the piping class, defined by a MESC number with a short name and an application code. |

## D

| Term | Meaning |
| --- | --- |
| Database | A collection of information organized in such a way that a computer program can quickly select desired pieces of data, i.e. an electronic filing system. |
| Design limit | A range of temperatures with their maximum allowable pressures limiting the selected components in the piping class. |
| DN | A dimensionless designator used in the SI (metric) system to describe pipe size |

| Term | Meaning |
| --- | --- |
| Group piping classes | Piping classes, covered by DEP 31.38.01.12-Gen. (Refineries and Chemical plants and DEP 31.38.01.15-Gen. (Exploration and Production). |

## M

| Term | Meaning |
| --- | --- |
| Material code | A 1-digit to 4-digit code to identify a Material description. |
| MESC | Material and Equipment Standards and Code; a SHELL standard. |
| MESC number | A 10-digit number to identify a material description. |

## N

| Term | Meaning |
| --- | --- |
| Note id | A 2-digit to 4-digit code to identify a standardized Note. |

## P

| Term | Meaning |
| --- | --- |
| Piping class | An assembly of piping components suitable for a defined service and design limits, in a piping system |
| Piping class definition | The basic information to compose a piping class |
| Print flag | An indicator used for components in assemblies (Y = default; N = used within assemblies only). |

## S

| Term | Meaning |
| --- | --- |
| Schedule | The wall thickness designation according to ASME B36.10M or B36.19M. |
| Short name | A 5-character code used to identify a Piping Component. |
