Civil Confidence in Remnant Life Estimate (Step 8)
Find below additional details for Step 8 of the Civil RBI Methodology.
The key question here is: “How well can we predict the future?”
To put it in other words: “Do we have sufficient historical data and information about future changes to predict the moment of failure accurately?” The confidence rating reflects the confidence that the Civil engineer has in the assessment of the remaining functional life.
Influence factors that determine the confidence rating are:
- Stability of the degradation mechanism
- Awareness of the damages and events that have occurred to the asset
- Knowledge about future changes in e.g. environmental conditions
- Experience with the applied materials and design/construction techniques
The table below gives the rating options. The default confidence rating is ‘Intermediate’, which is valid for an asset that has been designed to applicable codes and standards and has been constructed with normal quality and for which history is known.
Table: Confidence classes
