The objective of a HAZOP is to review the design, with an intent to identify design and engineering issues that may otherwise not have been found. The technique is based on breaking the overall complex design of the process into several simpler sections, called Nodes, which are then individually reviewed. The review should be carried out by an experienced multi-disciplinary team, during a series of meetings.
Defining Nodes
To define a Node:
- Click on the Node card (cell).
- Enter a Description for the Node: Click on the card and start typing or click the Edit button in the toolbar to open the text edit pop-up. Take Note that this is a required field.
- You can use “Intelligent Text Recognition” to add Equipment to the card:
- Start typing the Equipment name in the description field.
- Click <Ctrl> + <Space>.
- Select one of the suggestions or click the search icon.
- The Equipment will be added to the card. It will also be added as a link in the description field.
- Click the fold-out bar.
On the Details Tab:
- Enter the Session Date.
- Enter the Design intent for the Node.
- Enter the Operating Conditions.
- Enter the Design Conditions.
- Select the applicable Equipment for the Node (if you have not yet):
- Click the search button.
- Then use the search or filter functionality to find the desired Equipment.
On the Specifications Tab:
- In the Specs section, click Edit to add Values for the Specs.
- In the Equipment Spec section, switch the button on if you want to see the Equipment Specs.
On the Documents Tab:
- Click on SEARCH FOR DRAWINGS to search for a desired drawing and add it to the Node. Note: These drawings will also be added to the Parent (whole HAZOP) Documents Tab.
- In the Attachments section:
- To add a new attachment that has not yet been added to the Parent (whole HAZOP), click on Add new attachment, or just drag and drop a file here. The attachments that you add from here will be added to this Node, as well as to the Parent; or
- To add an attachment that has already been added to the Parent Documents Tab, click on Add from parent. This button only shows if you have already uploaded attachments to the Parent:
- Click on the left corner of an attachment to select it and then click Done; or
- Click Add new attachment to add a new attachment. Then click Done.
- Click on the left corner of an attachment to select it and then click Done; or
- When an attachment has been added to the Node, it will show in this Attachments section:
- To annotate an attachment, select it (right corner) to make the annotation functionality available (note that the delete functionality is only available from the Parent Documents Tab). See Documents Tab for more information.
- In the Other documents section, click + and use the search functionality to find desired documents. Note: These documents will also be added to the Parent (whole HAZOP) Documents Tab . See Documents Tab.
- To add an attachment that has already been added to the Parent Documents Tab, click on Add from parent. This button only shows if you have already uploaded attachments to the Parent:
- When done defining the Node, click +Add Deviations to select and add the appropriate Deviations for the Node from the template (see image); or
- If you want to define the Deviations later, just close the details window.
When done defining the Node, you can start defining the potential Deviations from the design intent.
Marking Nodes as Done (Not Needed)
When a HAZOP study is not required for a specific Node, then you can mark this Node as done. This option is only available when all the related child objects of that Node are still empty.
To mark a Node as done:
- Click on the fold-out bar of the Node.
- Check the Mark as done box.
- In this case the words “Not Needed” will show in the Node card. It will then not be required to define the related child objects, i.e., Deviation, Cause, Consequence and Existing safeguard for that Node.
Adding Nodes
To Add a Node:
- Click the + Add Node button in the toolbar (see Toolbar); or
- Use the keyboard shortcut: <Ctrl> + <Shift> + <+> (see Keyboard Shortcuts); or
- Use to add a Node before the current Node (see Toolbar).
Note 1: A new Node cannot be created when you still have an empty Node.
Note 2: You cannot Copy, Paste, Cut, or Link Nodes, but they can be Deleted.
Collapsing the Node Column
When you are done defining the Nodes, you can collapse the column to make more space for the other columns. To do so click the arrow button.

To expand the Nodes again click the arrows.
