Find below additional details for Step 5 of the Civil RBI Methodology.
The susceptibility rating is indicated in the susceptibility class table below.
Susceptibility ratings:
Rating
Description
Negligible
The asset is over-designed for the applicable degradation mechanism, e.g., material quality is better than required
It is very likely that the actual lifetime will be twice the design lifetime.
Low
(default value)
The design has considered all applicable actors that cause the degradation mechanism (e.g,. correct coating has been applied).
It is very likely that the design lifetime will be reached.
Medium
Some applicable parameters for the degradation mechanisms have not been considered in the design, because of insufficient awareness of their existence or knowingly (e.g., due to budget restraints).
It is likely that the design lifetime will not be reached without intervention (maintenance/repair) after half of the design life.
High
The design has neglected the applicable parameters for age-related failure to a considerable extend.
It is very likely that the design lifetime of the asset will not be met, and that maintenance intervention is required earlier than a fourth of the design life
Throughout the lifetime of the asset the conditions of its environment may change, which would necessitate a review of the susceptibility to degradation. If for instance a steel asset becomes exposed to the draft of a cooling water tower, then the lifetime of the paint system on the steel asset may be reduced resulting in an unexpected onset of atmospheric corrosion.
The default susceptibility rating is Low, which is valid for an asset that has been designed to applicable codes and standards and has been constructed with the desired quality.
