Oxidation

Summary

Surface oxidation consumes a metal by progressive reaction between the metal surface and oxidising gases at elevated temperatures. The reaction usually produces a scale, or layer of metal oxides, on the surface of the metal. As the oxide scale develops on the surface of the metal, the rate of oxidation tends to decrease with time because it is diffusion controlled. Removal of the scale (e.g., by spalling) causes the oxidation rate to increase.
