Queries are used for creating specific data sets that can later be filtered and exported to Excel like any other grid, they can also be used in Dashboards. Reports are used to generate Word or PDF documents based on predefined templates and prepared data sets.
It is possible to use existing Queries and Report or to create you own custom ones. See IMS Reports and IMS Queries.
