Article summary

Above, and on the right of the HAZOP grid, are Toolbars (see image below). The table explains the functions.

The HAZOP Tab toolbars. The HAZOP Toolbar:

Note: Not all icons are available for all columns, e.g., a Node and Deviation cannot be copied.

Icon

Action / Name

Description

Node selection

Use the dropdown to select any of the defined Nodes. The selected Node will then be loaded.

Add

Shortcut:

<Ctrl> + <Shift> + <+>

Add a new card. Depending on the selected card, the function will add a new Node, or Deviation, or Cause, etc. You can create more than one Deviation card for a Node card and again more than one Cause card for a Deviation card, etc.

However, when you still have an empty Deviation card for the related Node, then you cannot create a new Deviation card for that Node; or when you have an empty Cause card for the related Deviation, then you cannot create a new Cause card for that Deviation; etc. A warning will show.

Add before selected item

Add a new card before the selected card.

Add after selected card

Add a new card after the selected card.

Delete

Shortcut:

<Ctrl> + <Shift> + <->

Delete the card. Note: The related child elements will also be deleted. For example, when you delete a Node, then all Deviation cards, Cause cards, etc., related to that Node, will also be deleted.

Edit

Shortcut: <SHIFT> +<F2>

Use this to open the text editor and Edit the selected Card’s Description. Note: Alternatively, you can also just double click in the card or directly start typing in the selected card.

Revision

Use this to edit the Card’s Description and to see, and revert back to, earlier revisions of the Card’s Description.

Action

Shortcut: <Ctrl> + <Shift> + <A>

Use this to add new Action items to the selected card. A pop-up will appear. Here you can enter a Description, and then select a date, responsible Party, Urgency level and Action Type. An icon will appear on the associated card from where you can edit or view the Action. All Actions are also summarized on the Action Tab.

Copy

Shortcut: <Ctrl> + <C>

Copy selected cell(s) and related child elements. When you Copy a Cause card, then you automatically also Copy all its child elements - Consequences, Severities, Existing safeguards,  ALARPs, and Recommendations related to that Cause.

Node and Deviation cards cannot be Copied and Pasted.

Cut

Shortcut: <Ctrl> + <X>

Cut (remove) selected cell(s) and related child elements. When you cut a Cause card, then you automatically also cut all Consequences, Severities, Existing safeguards, ALARPs, and Recommendations related to that Cause.

Node and Deviation cards cannot be Cut.

Paste (advanced)

Shortcut: <Ctrl> + <V>

Paste copied card(s) and related child elements. When you Paste a Cause card, then you automatically also Paste all its child elements - Consequences, Severities, Existing safeguards,  ALARPs, and Recommendations related to that Cause.

Node and Deviation cards cannot be Copied and Pasted.

Paste & Link

Shortcut: <Ctrl> + <Shift> + <L>

This action is available only for Consequences. When different Causes have the same Consequence, you can copy the Consequence from one Cause and the Paste & Link the Consequence to the other Cause.

All the Consequence child elements (Existing safeguards and Recommendations) will then automatically be replicated and linked as well.

When elements are linked, they will always be synced, with one exception: On the Existing safeguard the Validation section remains unlinked. This way it is possible to indicate an Existing safeguard as Not Valid for a specific Cause-Consequence combination.

(Nodes, Deviations and Causes cannot be linked.)

For more information see Linking Consequences.

Paste (simple)

Shortcut: <Ctrl> + <Shift> + <V>

Simple Paste selected card. In this case the child elements are not Pasted.

Undo

Shortcut:  <Ctrl> + <Z>

Undo the previous action.

Redo

Shortcut: <Ctrl> + <Y>

Redo the previous action.

Sync

Update the HAZOP using data from all the connected LOPAs.

This button is only shown when syncing is required. This can happen when the HAZOP (and LOPAs) was Approved, and a connected LOPA is put back into Draft mode. A warning will first tell you to put the HAZOP back in Draft mode. Out of Sync elements will be indicated with . You can then sync the elements individually with , or all at once with . When Synced, changes made to Barriers in the LOPA(s) will be copied to connected Existing safeguards, changes made to Initiating Events in the LOPA(s) will be copied to connected Causes, and changes to Consequences and their Severities will also be copied. See Syncing the HAZOP with connected LOPAs.

Search

Type part of the Description for a Node, or Deviation or Cause, etc., and click enter. You can then check the box to specify it the search should be in the current Node, else all Nodes will be searched. A link / multiple links will enable you to navigate to the desired results. To close, just click the search icon.

Settings (Show Details, High Contrast)

When you click the Settings icon, two settings appear:

  • You can switch off the details. The cards will be condensed to show less information.
  • You can switch on the high contrast. Black cards will then be shown with white font.

Consistency check

The consistence check highlights cards with missing data by making the fold-out bars either orange or yellow. You can switch this consistency check on at any time. But when Approving, this will automatically be switched on. Note: An Approval is not possible when there are orange cards, but yellow cards will not block Approvals. In future this will be configurable. See Approving HAZOPs.

When the Consistency check is on, two arrow buttons will appear which you can use to jump between the missing data.

Search

Same functionality as other search button  – see above.

The HAZOP Hierarchy

Here, the HAZOP Nodes, and their related elements, e.g., Deviations, Causes, etc. are shown in a Hierarchy view. Click on an item to navigate to that card. To close the Hierarchy view, click the Hierarchy icon again.

Approve

When done with the HAZOP Study, you must Approve the HAZOP from here. See Approving HAZOPs.
