Article summary

For each Node, the HAZOP team can use a list of standardized guidewords and process parameters to identify potential Deviations from the design intent.

Defining Deviations

For each Node, define its Deviation(s):

  • Click on the Deviation card next to the Node.
  • On the card (in the description field) type the Parameter & (multiple) Guideword combinations and click <Enter>: If recognized they words will turn blue. Else type a Parameter / Guideword and click <Ctrl> + <Space> so that the “Intelligent Text Recognition ” can suggest Parameter & Guideword combinations to select; or
Start typing and click <Ctrl + <Space>. IMS will suggest Parameter and Guide combinations.

  •  Click the fold-out bar and select the Parameter and (multiple) Guide words; or
Select a Parameter and Guide on the Deviation details fold-out.
  • Define multiple Deviations simultaneously from the Node’s fold-out.
On the Node fold-out, click Add Deviation to select and add Deviations from the template.

Note: In Settings the HAZOP Study Deviation Template can be accessed and modified to your needs.

Marking Deviation as Done (Not Needed)

When a HAZOP study is not required for a specific Deviation, then you can mark this Deviation as done. This option is only available when all the related child objects of that Deviation are still empty.

To mark a Deviation as done:

  • Click on the fold-out bar of the Deviation.
  • Check the Mark as done box.
Add a checkmark when a HAZOP is Not Needed for the Deviation.
In this case the words “Not Needed” will show in the Deviation card. It will then not be required to define the related child objects, i.e., Cause, Consequence and Existing safeguard for that Deviation.
The Deviation is marked as “Not Needed”. Related child objects are not required to be filled in.

Adding Deviations

To Add Deviations:

  • Click the + Add Deviation button in the toolbar (see Toolbar); or
  • Use the keyboard shortcut: <Ctrl> + <Shift> + <+> (see Keyboard Shortcuts); or
  • Use to add a Deviation before the current Deviation (see Toolbar).

Note 1: A new Deviation cannot be created when you still have an empty Deviation.

Note 2: You cannot Copy, Paste, Cut, or Link Deviations, but they can be Deleted.

Collapsing the Deviation Column

When you are done defining the Deviations, you can collapse the column to make more space for the other columns. To do so click the arrow button.

Click the arrows to collapse the Deviation column.

Note: By hovering over the collapse Deviation, you can see the description.

To expand the Deviations again click the arrows.Click the arrows to expand the Deviation column.
