Step 14 Maintain the Barriers:

Below the Step 14 Methodology is described. See also Software Step 14.

Perform the needed corrective actions for the compromised or absent Barriers:

• Corrective action for structural IOW exceedances (compromised/absent process control Barrier).
• Corrective action (CAIR) for compromised/absent mechanical design (hardware) Barriers.

Do this in a way that takes into account the risk rank and mitigation actions that was put in place (see Step 13):

• Operational Barriers: IOW variables, where routine exceedance follow-up does not result in operation within the IOW window, should follow an escalation scenario resulting in:
  • Maintenance Notification (Perform Maintenance Execution – ME).
  • Change of limits (MOC).
  • Risk ranking and long-term resolution (Manage Threats & Opportunities – MTO).
• Mechanical design (hardware) Barriers: Identification and Prioritization of Maintenance Execution Work should be based on the risk (from the S-RBI Assessment). A latest allowable finish date for the corrective action should be determined and a CAIR registered resulting in:
  • Maintenance Notifications (Perform Maintenance Execution – ME), or
  • Turn Around (TA) Scope (Perform TA).
