The development of a long-term inspection and maintenance plan for your Civil assets involves several steps, as listed below. #### Prepare the basis for the plan: 1. Define the Civil Asset in IMS ([Step 1](/v410/docs/step-1-define-the-asset-in-civil)). 2. Start the RBI Analysis, assign the Degradation Mechanisms and define the most credible Failure Scenario ([Step 2](/v410/docs/step-2-start-the-rbi-analysis-assign-the-dms-and-define-the-credible-failure-scenario)). 3. Determine the Condition Status (i.e., review the Inspection History and credit the Degradation Mechanisms) ([Step 3](/v410/docs/step-3-determine-the-condition-status-and-credit-the-dms-in-civil)). 4. Estimate the Remaining Functional Life (only AR) ([Step 4](/v410/docs/step-4-estimate-the-remaining-functional-life-in-civil)). 5. Determine the Probability (AR) or Likelihood (NAR) of Failure ([Step 5](/v410/docs/step-5-determine-the-probability-or-likelihood-of-failure-in-civil)). 6. Rate the Consequences of FailureĀ ([Step 6](/v410/docs/step-6-rate-the-consequences-of-failure-in-civil)). 7. Review the Criticality and Present Failure Risk ([Step 7](/v410/docs/step-7-review-the-criticality-and-present-failure-risk)). #### Prepare a Risk Based Inspection Plan: 1. Determine the Confidence and Inspection Interval Factor (only AR) ([Step 8](/v410/docs/step-8-do-a-confidence-assessment-and-determine-the-inspection-interval-factor-ar)). 2. Determine the Next Inspection Date and link to an Inspection Schedule (only AR) ([Step 9](/v410/docs/step-9-determine-the-next-inspection-date-ar-and-link-to-an-inspection-schedule)). #### Prepare an Optimized Maintenance Plan: 1. Define alternative Preventive Maintenance Scenarios ([Step 10](/v410/docs/step-10-define-alternative-preventive-maintenance-scenarios-in-civil)). 2. Estimate the Life Cycle Costs for PM Scenarios ([Step 11](/v410/docs/step-11-estimate-the-life-cycle-costs-for-pm-scenarios-in-civil)). 3. Evaluate the Maintenance Scenarios ([Step 12](/v410/docs/step-12-evaluate-the-maintenance-scenarios)). For Age-Related Degradation Mechanisms, each of above steps are applicable, whereas for Non-Age-Related (event-related) Degradation Mechanisms steps [4](/v410/docs/step-4-estimate-the-remaining-functional-life-in-civil), [8](/v410/docs/step-8-do-a-confidence-assessment-and-determine-the-inspection-interval-factor-ar) and [9](/v410/docs/step-9-determine-the-next-inspection-date-ar-and-link-to-an-inspection-schedule) can be disregarded. ## Degradation Management Process The figure below shows how these steps fit into the Degradation Management process. The Plan Inspection, Execute Tasks, and Analyze step apply only to Age-Related Degradation Mechanisms. ![](https://cdn.document360.io/e492a0e0-a4ba-4aca-8fc6-76b95f91fdf3/Images/Documentation/image-1783442969290.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-10-28T21%3A02%3A20Z&se=2026-10-28T22%3A02%3A20Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=zg8rAAktI4ibBohs23nyQ48ZsDx2VatTXoRHNbFoFag%3D) ## The figure below outlines the specific RBI assessment steps: ![](https://cdn.document360.io/e492a0e0-a4ba-4aca-8fc6-76b95f91fdf3/Images/Documentation/image-1783443086038.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-10-28T21%3A02%3A20Z&se=2026-10-28T22%3A02%3A20Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=zg8rAAktI4ibBohs23nyQ48ZsDx2VatTXoRHNbFoFag%3D) ## IMS Civil Hierarchy & Workflow When implementing the [software steps](/v410/docs/step-1-define-the-asset-in-civil), you can refer to the following Hierarchy and workflow. ![](https://cdn.document360.io/e492a0e0-a4ba-4aca-8fc6-76b95f91fdf3/Images/Documentation/Civil%20Workflow%20(2).png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-10-28T21%3A02%3A20Z&se=2026-10-28T22%3A02%3A20Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=zg8rAAktI4ibBohs23nyQ48ZsDx2VatTXoRHNbFoFag%3D) For more background information see [Civil Methodology - Background](/v410/docs/ims-civil-methodology-introduction).
