# References and International Standards

First published in 1978, the Reliability-Centered Maintenance report by F.S. Nowlan and Howard F. Heap introduced RCM as a structured methodology for developing preventive maintenance programs for complex aviation equipment. It represents the basis for modern-day RCM.

John Moubray's Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM II) represents an authoritative reference document on RCM. It applies the ideas from the Nowlan and Heap report to a method that can be used across various industries.
