CAPS2025 Short Names

This section of the Handbook discusses Short Names and how to construct them when creating new Piping Components in CAPS2025.

Shell CAPS Code

The Shell CAPS Code (also referred to as Short Name - Application Code) is a code used to identify Piping components in CAPS2025. CAPS Codes contain the following information:

  1. Type of component (e.g. pipe, elbow, valve, bolt).

  2. Design and dimensional standards (e.g. ASME B36.10 for pipe, ASME B16.9 for fittings, API 600 for gate valves).

  3. Component features (e.g. seamless, welded, forged, cast, plain ends, flanged).

  4. End connections.

  5. Service and materials.

The following information is not included in CAPS Codes:

  1. Sizes.

  2. Wall thickness.

  3. Lengths (for bolting).

CAPS Codes have a fixed length of 9 or 16 alphanumeric characters, depending on the implementation, and are constructed of two parts:

  • Short Name: Consists of 5 characters for all component groups. Contains information required to define the component and design features.

  • Application Code: Consists of 11 characters for valves and 4 characters for all other component groups. These characters describe the materials and service requirements for the component.

Note

Some Sites use 11 characters for all components. This, and other settings, can be controlled in Application Settings.

Taken together, the 16 character the CAPS Code fully defines a component, without size or wall thickness. Adding size and wall thickness characters to the CAPS Code allows you to generate a Material and Equipment Standards and Code (MESC). The unique MESC corresponds to values in the Shell Catalogue Management Tool (CMT) database.

Key Rules and Guiding Principles for Assigning CAPS Codes

To ensure consistency in the application of CAPS codes, the rules are provided for the format of each component group for the piping discipline:

  • Component Groups are:

    • Pipe (PI)

    • Flange (FL)

    • Fitting (FI)

    • Reducing fitting (RF)

    • Valves (VS)

    • Other categories (OT)

    • Instrument (LI), and

    • Boltset (BS).

  • PCA and CSA (admin) roles can edit and delete short name and application code characters.

  • If a value is null or does not exist in the CMT_FORMAT table, the character must be "N" - Normal.

  • Specific character values can be configured as a default value via CMT common data configuration.

  • Short name characters 3,4 & 5 can have a parent character set up via CMT common data configuration.

  • Application code characters 1,2,3,4 & 6, (and 8,9,10,11,13 in reference files) can have a parent character set up via CMT common data configuration.

  • Short name and application code characters consist only of uppercase letters and numbers.

  • Short name character 5 and application code character 11 (reference file char 18) are not mandatory to be able to save the new component.

  • When short name char 2 is defined in "Format," it should not be possible to add the setup in "Format Position Character Value" for position 2.

  • When short name character 2 is not defined in "Format," and position 2 has the setup in "Format Position Character Value," short name character 2 will not be editable in the "Format" Table.

  • When adding a new setup in "Short Name Position Sequence," the entry for the "Position" should be from 2-18 only.

Assigning Short Names

When creating a Piping Component in CAPS2025, the New Component dialog includes 5 mandatory fields comprising the 5 Short Name characters.

New Component Dialog.

To create a Short Name for your new Piping Component:

  • Select the appropriate Component Group from the dropdown.

Select a Component Group.

Based on the Component Group you selected, you can proceed to select the first/second Short Name Character:

  • Click on the Search icon in the Short Name Character 1 field.

Click Search.
  • Next, select the from the list of Nouns (component types) presented in the dialog that appears.

  • Click OK.

Select a Noun (component type) and click OK.

Note

For most component types (Nouns), the first two Short Name Characters will be filled in. For some, such as Elbows, only the first Short Name Character will be filled in.

After selecting the Component Type and clicking OK, the first character (or two) of the Short Name will be filled in on the New Component dialog. To continue creating the Short Name:

  • Click Add Character on the next empty Short Code field.

Add next Character to Short Code.

Continue with each succeeding character until all Short Name Character fields have been completed.

Note

Short Name Character 5 is not mandatory to save the component.

Modifying Short Name and Application Code Characters

Short Name and Application Code Characters are stored in Application Setting → Maintenance → CMT Common Data. These data can only be modified by users with the CSA or PCA roles. See CAPS2025 Security Settings for more information.
