Article summary

The Bowtie Details Page shows the Bowtie for a specific Hazard Scenario. Bowties can be created from a HAZOP Consequence Hazard.

Opening the  Bowtie Details Page

Clicking a Bowtie hyperlink in the Bowtie Main Screen (grid list) or the Navigate to Bowtie button on the HAZOP Consequence card will open the Bowtie Details Page where the Bowtie is displayed along with the Approved HAZOP and LOPA data.

Bowtie View.

The Bowtie diagram depicts the HAZOP elements as follows:

  • Left side:
    • Threats: The potential Causes (Initiating Evets) of the Top Event. In IMS we show the Consequence description on the card and when you open the details you will see the relevant Causes (Initiating Events).
    • Control Barriers: The measures put in place to prevent the threats from causing the Top Event.
  • Center:
    • Hazard: The potential source of danger or harm. This is defined in the HAZOP Consequence.
    • Top Event: Event that leads to the loss of control of the hazard. This is defined in the HAZOP Consequence.
  • Right side:
    • Conditional Modifiers: Conditions that reduce the probability of occurrence of the final Consequences.
    • Recovery Measures: The measures put in place to mitigate the Consequences if the Top Event and Hazard occurs.
    • Consequences: The potential outcomes of the Top Event and Hazard. The eventual impact on people, assets, community, and environment. This is predefined in Hazard and Effect register.
The Bowtie Consequence column shows the Consequence as defined in the Hazard and effect register.

Showing LOPA Data

If a LOPA is related to the Threat-Consequence line, then the Bowtie view will:
  • Display the PFD calculations of the individual Barriers that are common to the LOPA and the Bowtie.
  • Show which Barriers are valid/not valid/partially valid for a given Initiating Event.
  • Updated whenever the LOPA is updated.
  • Show PFD L-H values by default when viewing the Bowtie, similar to SIFPro 4 behavior.
