Article summary

This online manual explains the Components in IMS:

  • How to interpret and use the Components Main screen (list).
  • How to create new Components.
  • How to interpret and use the Components details screen.
This will enable you to:
  • Understand when a General Component is created.
  • Add specs for a Component.
  • Add Components to the scope of a Schedule.
  • Start an RBI Analysis for a Component-Degradation Mechanism (DM).
  • Link the Component to a Circuit(s).

In PEI Hierarchy - Overview you can see a visual depiction of the Hierarchy. Have a look to see where Components fit in!

Components are the separate parts of an Equipment that have the Barriers against the Threats of the Degradation Mechanisms (DMs). Thus, they need verification through inspection. The RBI risk analysis therefore takes place on this level (per DM). This helps to determine the Next Inspection Date (NID). Examples of Components would include the top of a column, the water boot of a separator, the Shell of an Exchanger, and the Tubes of an air cooler.

A Component must be linked to a Corrosion Loop (CL) before applicable DMs can be assigned to the Component. CLs are groups of Components where Degradation is Managed in the same way.

A Circuit and Component can be set to be inherit. RBI then uses the Circuit’s CR calculations (RCA and SCR) to estimate the Remnant Life (RL). A Circuit covers all Piping- or Equipment-Components where the same Corrosion Rate is Expected/Measured. This is the level on which Wall Thickness (WT) measurements are inputted and CR calculations take place.

For more information on the link with CLs and Circuits see Relationship between CLs, Components and Circuits.
