Selecting RSL Tasks based on Specs - Details

RSL Care Strategies provide decision logic that determines whether a task applies to an RSL, based on FLOC and Equipment data such as Specs.

The walkthrough below illustrates this process using one example scenario — a control valve FLOC with Spec-driven Strategies. The specific values used (valve tags, Spec names) are illustrative, not prescriptive.

FLOC and Equipment Specs

You can sometimes find Specs on FLOCs and Equipment. Some Specs originate from SAP, for instance through a data interface, while others can be imported directly into IMS.
The image below shows an example of the Spec 'ECS OVERHAUL REPLACEMENT' on two valves:

  • 13LCV010: NO (without data)

  • 13LCV011: YES (with data)

Specs can be entered manually, one-by-one, or through the Export for Import option.

Different Location types and Equipment groups often use different sets of Specs, so the Export-for-Import wizard includes a sub-step for selecting the relevant Specs. To keep each import simple, we recommend limiting the variation in Location types and Equipment groups per Export-for-Import.

With a clear view of the available Specs, we recommend mapping a story-line from Location type/Equipment group, to the relevant Failure Modes (FMs) and to the applicable maintenance tasks. The goal is to understand how each Spec affects the Failure Mode scenario and the tasks that apply to it.

Effect of a Spec on Failure Modes and Tasks

Here is an example for a control valve with the Failure Mode "Actuator Failure":

  • For intense time-based degradation of the actuator, we want to do a cleaning and stroke test every 4 years.

  • For minor degradation of the actuator, we want to do a cleaning and stroke test every 10 years.

The "ECS OVERHAUL REPLACEMENT" Spec lets us steer this: the 4-year tasks apply when the Spec is YES, and the 10-year tasks apply when it's NO.

Set Up a Selective RSL

To set up a Selective RSL, do the following:

  1. Open the Maintenance Library Details page.

  2. With the tasks identified, create an RSL.

  1. In the RSL, create the first Strategy 'Time Based Degradation High.' For more information on creating Care Strategies, see Creating and Managing Care Strategies in RSLs.

  1. Once you have created the strategy, click Edit to select tasks.

  1. For the selected tasks, set the Strategy requirements on the relevant Spec, in this case: ECS OVERHAUl REPLACEMENT = YES.

  1. Click Save.

  2. Then, if needed, click the + button to add a second Strategy on the same Selective RSL. In this case, add the "Time Based Degradation Low" strategy and select the tasks involved.

Note

When selecting Spec variables for the logic, select which conditions you would like to include as well as exclude. For more information, see Configuring RSL Strategies – Strategy Conditions.

  1. Approve the RSL before it can be used. Once approved, the data can no longer be edited.

Assign FLOCs to the Strategy

To assign FLOCs (or Equipment) to a Strategy, do the following:

  1. On the FLOC Main Screen (Grid List), select the desired FLOCs and click the Assign to Strategy bulk action option.

  1. Select the FLOCs to assign.

In this example, we use control valve Flocs 13LCV010, 13LCV011, and 13LCV012 from above; 13LCV012 has no Spec data, which lets us illustrate the effect of what happens in that case. The Bulk Assign wizard also lets you assign a System, Function, and Functional Failures at the same time.

  1. Review the decision logic, which applies the correct Strategy to each FLOC based on its Spec value.

Results in this example:

  • On 13LCV010, the ECS OVERHAUL REPLACEMENT Spec = YES, so the "TB degradation high" Strategy applies.

  • On 13LCV011, the Spec = NO, so the corresponding "TB degradation low" Strategy applies.

  • On 13LCV012, there is no Spec value, so no RSL is selected.

If multiple Functional Failures (FFs) are available, a warning appears, since each RSL Strategy can only connect to one Functional Failure.

Note

If a FLOC has multiple Failure Modes, they will all be connected to the same Functional Failure during assignment. Afterward, you can move individual Failure Modes from one Functional Failure to another directly in the system.

  1. Once the Functional Failures are selected, add Labels and review the assignment before confirming it.

Note

During Bulk Assignment, you can preview the tasks a Strategy will create before assigning it, by selecting the Strategy and using the blue arrow.

Clicking the blue arrow allows you to preview the tasks prior to assigning the strategy.
