Combining Integrated RSLs and Selective RSLs enables Speed Assign: a faster way to assign RSLs to equipment.
Speed Assign removes the need to manually select a Function and Functional Failure for every Failure Mode. Instead, RSLs are assigned to one dedicated location by default, and can be reorganized later.
Why Use Speed Assign?
Manually selecting the Function and Functional Failure for each Failure Mode is one of the most time-consuming parts of assigning RSLs. Speed Assign addresses this by using a single, dedicated Function and Functional Failure as a common repository for RSLs.
This is a shortcut relative to a strict RCM approach, but it's a reasonable trade-off for several reasons:
RSLs are templates, so they typically already contain shortcuts as opposed to traditional RCM analyses, which sometimes lack criticality, scenario, task, or cost data. As a result, the Maintenance Efficiency Indicator (MEI) often cannot be calculated for traditional RCM analyses.
Capital projects frequently need to assign many RSLs quickly. In these cases, following every RCM step in detail is a lower priority than speed of assignment.
On a Living Program, it typically makes more sense to invest time in getting the details right after the initial assignment, rather than during it.
IMS RCM lets you move tags between Functions and Functional Failures at any time. Starting in a common repository doesn't prevent moving RSLs to more specific locations later.
Reassigning RSLs that are already spread across many Functions and Functional Failures is time-consuming. Starting from a common repository makes it easier for you to reassign RSLs later.
How to Use Speed Assign?
In the RSL, set the Equipment Function and Equipment Functional Failure to the same value (for example, "RSL") for each Failure Mode. This creates a matching System Function and System Functional Failure that act as the common repository. The image below shows the Equipment Function and Equipment Functional Failure both set to "RSL," which drives the creation of a System Function "RSL" and System Functional Failure "RSL."

Use the Assign to Strategy bulk action to assign the FLOCs to a System. All selected FLOCs must belong to the same System.
