RCM Analysis - Review & Update Via Grid

Prev Next

This article describes how to review and update RCM Analyses from the Analysis Main Screen (Grid List). The 5 guided steps give good support for the initial setup of an RCM Analysis. Further improvement and optimization, however, often needs a structured overview of multiple Analyses at once — and that is what the Analysis Main Screen grid provides.

Note

To learn more about the IMS Main Screen functionality, see IMS Main Screen (Grid List).

In this overview, each RCM Analysis is shown on a single row. Above the grid, the Criticality Assessment area and the Failure Effects area are displayed.

Alternatively, click the Task tab to display the Recommended Tasks area. To show in full screen, click the Expand button. You can also click the Strategy tab or Calculations tab to display the desired information.

Analysis Grid Toolbar Functions

The Analysis grid provides powerful data management through the following functions, available on the top of the grid.

Edit

To edit data directly in the grid:

  1. Click Edit to enter edit mode.

  2. Modify or copy the data shown in the grid.

  3. Click Save to keep your changes, or Cancel to discard them. You can also Copy and Paste (see below).

Note

Because changes can be made quickly and en masse, take care to avoid mistakes.

This is especially efficient when several similar Analyses need updating — for example, the Analyses for an air-cooler bank with 16 fin-fans, belts, fans, and e-motors.

Copy and Paste

Extended copy and paste functionality lets you copy complete or partial Analyses to other Equipment. The target Equipment can be empty and unassigned to a System, or already assigned and holding part(s) of an Analysis.

You can copy step by step, or use the Paste Analysis Wizard. The step-by-step method provides several quick paste options: Criticality data, Tasks, Failure Effects, FM notes, Strategy, and MEI calculation. When you are done, click the Save button.

Paste Analysis Wizard

The wizard copies complete or partial Analyses to other Equipment. The target Equipment must already exist and be assigned to a System. You can copy from and to different units.

  1. Click the Paste Analysis Wizard button.

  1. Use the scoping bar and check boxes to filter the displayed data.

  2. Select the Tags to copy.

  3. Click Next.

  1. In the tree view (shown down to Failure Mode level), review the data to be mapped. Icons indicate whether a mapping — for instance to a Functional Failure — is complete and valid or missing.

  2. Select the Functional Failures.

  3. Click Next.

Note

Next is only available once all mappings to Functional Failures for the target Equipment or FLOCs are complete.

  1. Use the check boxes to specify the paste options.

  2. Click Finish to close the wizard.

Add/Remove Failure Modes and Templates

The New and Delete buttons let you add or remove Failure Modes and Templates directly in the main grid. This is especially efficient when reviewing RCM Analyses during Living Program activities.

You can also create a new maintenance library from here.

Bulk Assign Strategies

The assign multiple strategies, select the relevant Tags and click the Assign to Strategy button.

For more information, see Care Strategies on RSLs.

What If Scenarios

What If scenarios let you investigate several alternatives in sequence to find a better optimized maintenance strategy. A classical RCM Analysis compares the no-maintenance scenario with a do-maintenance scenario and determines the MEI. A What If scenario goes further, comparing multiple Analyses to find the most efficient do-maintenance scenario.

Note

  • If no Analysis reaches an MEI above the threshold, the What If scenarios demonstrate this and validate a run-to-failure outcome (no scheduled maintenance can be justified).

  • For run-to-failure (no scheduled maintenance) strategies, it is valuable to keep a What If scenario on record to show that the do-maintenance scenario is not economically attractive.

Creating and Viewing What If Scenarios

To create and view What If scenarios:

  1. Click the Create a What If scenario button. A What If scenario starts as a copy of an existing Analysis, which you can then modify.

  2. Click View and select What If Scenarios to see the scenarios you have created.

You can also create a new What If scenario from an existing one.

Deleting What If Scenarios

To delete a What If scenario, select it and click the Delete button.

Settin a Scenario as Default

You can set the most attractive scenario as the default. Select the scenario and click the Default button.

Exporting What-if Scenarios

For information on how to export What If scenarios, see RCM Analysis - Imports and Exports.

Screen settings

Use the Settings button to customize the grid view — which columns are shown and which buttons appear in the toolbar.

Different types of review may call for different columns. If the default set is not optimal, adjust it here. Note that:

  • Columns can be reordered by drag and drop.

  • Columns can be hidden by clearing their check boxes.

  • Data can be sorted automatically using the Plus button.

  • A Freeze can be applied by dragging the freeze line, so selected columns stay visible while you scroll right in the grid.

Depending on the review work, you can focus the grid on the most relevant data.

For instance, for different types of reviews, you may want to have different columns of data available. If the default set of columns are not optimal, they can be change via these Settings.
